Taking Care of an Insurance Claim After a Major Storm

seguroAs Texas continues to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, we mustn’t forget that South Florida is still in the middle of hurricane season. With that in mind, it’s important to know what to do should a major storm pass through and cause damage to your home.

If damage has occurred, immediately call your insurance provider and file a claim. An adjuster will schedule a time to visit to evaluate the damage and may even write you a check so you can start taking care of repairs.

Before the adjuster arrives, however, take a moment to walk through your home and make notes. That means making a list of everything that has been damaged, keeping records of purchase receipts or estimates of how much your items cost, taking pictures, and filming video if necessary. Never throw anything out without consulting with your insurer first.

When disasters strike, there is an increased chance of fraudulent contractors emerging to try and take advantage of homeowners. You may receive a visit from someone offering their repair services. While they may be legit, always request an estimate on paper and refrain from signing anything without thoroughly evaluating it first. If the contractor asks for payment upfront before the work is done, that’s a red flag.
