Preparing for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season has arrived, and it can cause property damage as well as disrupt businesses. It is important that you are prepared for a worst-case scenario, and there is no better time than now before the threat is looming. If you wait until a hurricane watch or threat is issued it may be too late to make the necessary precautions. If you live in a mobile home, coastal areas, or anywhere prone to flooding, you may have to evacuate the area if there is a large scale storm.

Have your emergency supplies at reach. Whenever there is a hurricane, people will rush to a store to obtain supplies. It is better to get ahead of the crowd before that happens to have these supplies at hand.

  • Prescription Medication
  • Food that does not require refrigeration
  • Batteries
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • A portable battery-operated radio
  • Three days or more supply of drinking water
  • Tools for emergency repairs on your home
  • Matches
  • A source of light such as lamp

Make note of any personal belongings. Doing this will make sure that there is enough coverage in your insurance to replace your belongings. It can expedite the process when claiming your lost items, and is also very useful if you need to apply for disaster aid should you need to leave during a storm

Make sure to check your insurance policies. Remember that homeowners insurance covers your additional living expenses and will cover the cost of any temporary repairs that need to be taken care of sustained from hurricane damage. Homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage, so you should consider looking into purchasing flood insurance. If you live along the shoreline or near the coast it is possible that you may need to look into another insurance for wind/windblown water damage for your home.
