Mother Nature has remained mostly dormant when it comes to sending hurricanes towards South Florida, and hopefully, it will stay that way. Besides having your emergency preparedness kit ready in the event a major storm hits, it’s also important to think about the four-legged members of the family.
When it comes to priority, pets, unfortunately, aren’t as high on the list as humans so it’s up to you to make sure your pooch is ready for a storm. One way to be proactive is ensuring your pet is microchipped. If you become separated from your pet because of a major storm, any veterinarian can scan the chip which provides medical plus contact information. Ensuring your pet has a collar with contact information also helps.
You may be asked to evacuate or head to a shelter if the storm is particularly devastating. Make sure you have a crate with you as there is the possibility some facilities may have restrictions, including for pets on a leash.
Dog toys, bags for pet waste, dog food, a portable food and water bowl, all of these should be part of your pet emergency kit.
