Most Florida Homeowners Are Unprepared

The importance of hurricane preparedness has been stressed time and time again yet a recent study suggests more than half of Florida’s homeowners have yet to take the recommended steps to protect their homes against the potentially catastrophic impact of a storm.

The survey asked Florida residents how they go about preparing their homes should a major coastal storm approach. Somewhat alarmingly, less than one in seven people stated that they had taken the measures to install a door that could withstand the effects of the storm. What’s more, under fifteen percent of respondents found roof protection to be an issue. A third of them did say, however, that they do plan ahead by purchasing emergency supplies. As for storm shutters, less than a fifth of them had invested in them.

When it comes to insured U.S. coastal properties vulnerable to storms such as hurricanes, Florida ranks in second place, with an estimated cost of more than $2.5 trillion.
