Though it doesn’t receive the same amount of attention as a hurricane, lightning can still do a significant amount of damage to a home. With South Florida’s unpredictable weather patterns, lightning storms can strike at virtually any time. As the strikes become more common, there is obviously a greater risk of property damage. Hence, it is imperative that homeowners take the necessary steps and precautions to protect their homes.
According to a Newsmax article, more than 100,000 insurance claims that were filed in 2016 were lightning-related, and most of the lightning-related losses came from Florida. Most insurance policies do provide coverage for lighting strikes and damage resulting from a fire. The policy may also provide power surge coverage, which can cause damage to electronics or even a home’s electrical foundation. A lightning protection system may be something worth considering.
With the April showers on the horizon as well as hurricane season, take some time to evaluate your home for proper lightning protection. Also, examine your insurance policy to make sure you have the proper coverage to avoid any expensive surprises.
