When’s the last time you checked whether your home is located in a flood zone? Flood maps in Miami were recently tweaked, which means Miami’s changes and amendments to flood maps and related ordinances will bring about major changes.
The properties on the revised maps are now situated in special flood hazard areas. This means that if the homeowners have a mortgage, they will likely be required to obtain flood insurance. While it does result in another cost of homeownership, flood insurance can save homeowners thousands in repairs or avoid a devastating situation where they lose everything.
Homeowners in flood zones should remember that even if they have a homeowners insurance policy with good coverage, there are strong odds that policy will not provide any coverage for floods. In most cases, protection from flooding requires purchasing an entirely separate policy. Since we’re still in the middle of hurricane season and the tropics remain active, homeowners should be vigilant.
