Hurricane season is here and although forecasters appear to be suggesting a slightly below average season, history has shown that just one storm regardless of the category can result in millions of dollars in damage. Now is the time to start making preparations while Mother Nature remains calm.
One easy way to start preparing is to check with your insurance company regarding your policy coverage. For example, will your policy cover the cost in the event you need to have certain belongings replaced? It’s also important to find out whether the current assessed value of your home is enough to cover rebuilding costs should a major catastrophe occur.
A few things we’ve mentioned before: flood insurance and home inventory. Remember that the majority of homeowners insurance companies do not cover floods. Purchasing a policy usually requires about a month before it will go into effect. Floods can happen even if you don’t live near water. As for inventory, you can keep it simple by using your smartphone to take pictures of your personal belongings which you can then back up to a cloud service.
Your insurance company may also have an app or tool to help you inventory.
