Did your home suffer damage due to the effects of Hurricane Irma? Assuming you haven’t done so already, there are certain steps you should take if you’re dealing with storm-related damage to your home.
Have all of your applicable insurance policies on hand. Besides your homeowners’ policy, you may also want to have your vehicle policy available if your car suffered damage. Remember that flood insurance policy is generally not covered under a homeowners’ policy and may require separate coverage if you don’t already have it.
Take notes of your belonging and property damage. Before you start making temporary repairs, take the time to snap some pictures or shoot video of the damage. When you file your claim, your insurer will likely ask you for documentation/proof of the damage. Situations like these are a good reminder to maintain a photographic inventory of your home.
Don’t delay. Insurance companies require claims to be reported promptly. Document your damages and contact them as soon as possible.
