Florida Is Now a Federal Disaster Area

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Florida has become one of the latest states to be declared a federal disaster area by the President of the United States. The move comes shortly after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis put in a request to have Florida declared as such. With the declaration, Florida is now eligible to receive federal funding as well as crisis counseling and emergency protective measures.

Unlike other states such as New York or Illinois, DeSantis has not announced a lockdown across the state due to the smaller counties that have reported very few coronavirus cases or none at all. According to the Insurance Journal article, the governor does not believe that these smaller counties should face the same restrictions as larger metropolitan areas. He has, however, ordered the closure of businesses such as gymnasiums and bars and has also mandated that restaurants provide only takeout and delivery services.
