While many of us view pets are four-legged members of the family, it’s worth remembering that these are animals which, if scared or agitated, can become aggressive and possibly bite someone. With the holiday season just around the corner, you’re probably going to have more people over; make sure you’re protecting yourself from liability.
Per the Insurance Information Institute, homeowners insurance companies across the United States paid well over $650 million in animal liability claims caused by dog bites or other dog-related injuries last year. The majority of standard homeowners’ insurance policies don’t provide animal liability coverage. Hence, if you have a pet or one that doesn’t do well with children, you may wish to inquire with your homeowners’ insurance provider to protect yourself.
There are simple steps you can take to prevent someone from being bitten by your pet. Make sure the dog is undisturbed while it’s eating, chewing on a toy, or sleeping. Be cautious when your pet is being exposed to new people or environments and if there are children around.
