As Texas begins to recover from the effects of Hurricane Harvey, it’s estimated the damage caused by the natural disaster could be in the billions. Despite being a powerful hurricane, the majority of the damage appears to be flood related versus wind-related. What’s worse, there is a possibility the majority of insurance policies may not have this coverage.
Florida is a state prone to hurricanes, and we are still in the middle of the season. Taking into account the billions of dollars of damages caused by Harvey, Florida homeowners should be aware that the majority of standard homeowner policies do not include coverage for floods. Unless it is mandated, flood insurance is typically an option, not a requirement. In other words, if a storm manages to tear the roof off of your home and water comes in, you’ll be covered. Should a canal overflow and cause water to rise and enter your home, you may not be covered.
When it’s hurricane season, it is imperative that homeowners examine the policy to determine what’s covered and what isn’t. It’s also worth knowing what steps to take in the event of an emergency. That means documenting losses, taking notes, and being cautious of fraud.
