The Influx of Venezuelan Asylum Seekers
As the turmoil in Venezuela continues, the number of Venezuelans seeking asylum has skyrocketed, and most of them are seeking asylum right here in the United States. Last year, over 30,000 people sought asylum, an increase of more than fifty percent when compared to 2015. This surge is particularly interesting considering that Venezuela was once a preferred refugee destination thanks to its friendly immigration policies and its then prosperous economy.
Venezuelans overstaying their tourist or business visa are also on the rise, forcing U.S. authorities to take stricter screening measures while also making it harder for other Venezuelans to successfully apply for a non-immigrant visa as more get rejected.
If you’re seeking asylum in the United States or need to discuss a visa, get in touch with our immigration law attorney and we may be able to help you. Also remember that if you decide to “overstay your welcome”, it will only make it harder to legally obtain residency.
