Hurricane Season is Less Than a Month Away

  • Hurricane Season is Less Than a Month Away

Next month will signal the arrival of hurricane season and if last year was any indication, it will likely be another unpredictable storm season for South Florida, with the looming possibility of one actually hitting us (i.e.: Hurricane Irma). If you haven’t yet considered flood insurance, your time may be running out.

As we’ve mentioned several times in previous blogs, the majority of standard Florida homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover floods, and that includes renters and business insurance. According to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, close a to a million property owners ended up filing claims due to losses sustained during Hurricane Irma. In fact, the total amount of damages caused by the storm has skyrocketed to more than $6 billion.

It’s imperative to keep in mind that even low-risk areas are still at risk of flooding, especially here in South Florida where there are so many homes and businesses located near bodies of water. If you’re considering purchasing insurance such as a National Flood Insurance Policy, that policy will not go into effect until thirty days after it has been purchased.
