Citizens Adds Coverage Reductions for Repairs Outside Its Control
In its ongoing efforts to fight against claims abuse and costly lawsuits, last-resort insurer Citizens Property Insurance Corp. has adjusted its plan to control home repairs by making additional coverage reductions for customers that choose not to make use of its Managed Repair Contractor Network. Should customers decline, its coverage for non-weather-related water damage involving things such as flooded cabinetry and broken pipes will be limited to $10,000, according to a recent Sun Sentinel article. Customers that do use the Managed Repair Contractor Network are not subjected to the limit.
The latest version of the Citizens plan also includes $3,000 for emergency repairs that Citizens implemented two years ago. This money would count against the new $10,000 water damage cap. For the past two years, the $3,000 was deemed “additional coverage” which did not count against any other limits regarding coverage. Again, these changes apply solely to customers that decline to enroll in the Managed Repair Contractor Network.
