One month into hurricane season, we have thankfully managed to avoid any major hurricane. However, hurricane season doesn’t officially end until November, so being proactive is always a good idea. Hurricane preparation can be expensive, but having to deal with the damages and the insurance headaches can be even costlier. These tips can help you with taking affordable, preventative measures.

    Invest in a surge protector
. Surge protectors are useful any time of the year as a surge can happen even during a typical South Florida thunderstorm. You may also want to consider adding some surge protection to your air conditioning unit.

    Cover up your A/C
. During a storm, debris of various size will fly all over the place. The small debris could fly right into your A/C unit and lodge itself there, potentially causing highly expensive damage. For optimal protection, it’s best to stick with a manufacturer approved solution versus taking the do-it-yourself approach.

    Get some plywood
. If your home doesn’t have shutters for whatever reason, plywood is an affordable and effective solution, assuming it’s plywood that meets inspection standards. Plywood demand rises sharply during hurricane season, so don’t wait until the last minute.

    Check your insurance policy
. When is the last time you examined your policy to find out what’s covered and what’s not covered? Checking your policy won’t cost you a dime, and you can avoid surprises by knowing what’s protected so you don’t find yourself in an unfortunate situation if a hurricane causes significant damage to your home.
